Everything you would like to know about skunks can be answered down below. If you have any questions that are not below, please feel free to contact us and we will fully explain your situation on these pests.
How do I recognize a skunk?
Skunks are stocky little animals about the size, and weight of a house cat. They have short stout legs with strong claws for digging up insects such as grubs.
What kind of skunks are there?
Four kinds of different skunks live in North America, and Europe. The spotted, hognose, hooded, and the striped skunks. The striped, and spotted skunks are so named after the coloring of their fur coats. The hooded skunk has a large amount of hair around it's neck giving the effect that it wears a hood. This skunk also has the longest tail of any skunk, nearly 15 inches or 38 centimeters. The hognose is so named as it's nose looks like that of a hog.
When are skunks most common?
Skunks make dens in hollow trees, near marshes, and ponds Also in the desert, and in the back streets, and yards in cities, and towns.
Are skunk's dangerous to humans?
Skunks are considered to be bad to carry rabies, but like most animals they die from it. When angered, skunks stamp their feet, hiss, and growl. Their spray is mostly used for defense. The two glands under the tail, generate the strong smelling musk. Then they stand on their front paws, tail against their backs as they face their victim to spray with a mist or stream. Up to 3 meters (10 ft) they are very accurate, but can reach nearly 5 meters (16 ft). At that distance the accuracy suffers greatly.
Are skunks destructive to property?
No, not as a general rule. The rare skunk with a poor diet may chew wallpaper or the sheetrock behind it. The veterinary explanation for this is a trace mineral deficiency. They don't chew wires or claw furniture. But they may steal your clothes, towels or bedspread to soften their own bed!
Are all skunks black and white?
NO, NO and NO!!! Skunks come in every color except green and blue! There is every shade of brown, black, grey and blonde. There are albino skunks, that have pink eyes and there are white skunks, that have dark eyes. There are even lavender skunks. They can have 2 stripes or 4 or 6. They can have spots and swirls mixed in amongst the stripes. Their tails are all different shapes and sizes. They are as different as we are!
Do skunks hibernate?
They hibernate until late February or early March. Mating takes place very early in the spring. Skunks give birth approximately 2 months later to 4- 6 babies which at first cannot see or hear.
What can I do to keep skunks away from my residence?
Make the area as inhospitable to skunks as possible. Remove all animal foods, such as dog and cat food or farm animal feed. Move and elevate the garbage cans as much as is feasible. A garbage can is to a skunk, what a refrigerator is to us!
